Suite Dreams

From the Artistic Director

For our final concert of the season, we have chosen to reminisce with “Suite Dreams,” the title of Steven Bryant’s dream-like fantasia based on Holst’s First Suite in Eb, which we performed at this season’s first concert. Tonight’s program opens with another piece by Bryant, Ecstatic Fanfare, which includes soaring and heroic lines drawn from the first movement of Ecstatic Waters called “Ceremony of Innocence” – it is meant to evoke a picture of children who dream with their youthful naiveté. Moving to a depiction of a more specific dream, the musical poem Der Traum des Oenghus refers to the Irish legend of Prince Oenghus who has a nightly dream of a girl who plays flute with whom he falls in love, but she keeps disappearing.

We are delighted to feature our woodwind section on Nimbus 2000, a lively, magical orchestral work composed by John Williams for the 2001 film “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Named after Harry’s famous broomstick, the piece captures a sense of flight and whimsical wonder. To close the program, we travel to the unknown with Adrian Sims’ Lucid Dreams, a rendition of a five-note melodic idea that can’t quite make up its harmonic mind, evoking musical hallucinations, both haunting and breathtaking.

Enjoy this dreamy music!
