Kurt Gros was appointed an Associate Director of Bands at Warren Township High School in 2006, and currently holds the title of Co-Director of Bands. Mr. Gros conducts Symphonic Band I, Concert Band I, and Concert Band II,. Under the direction of Mr. Gros, Warren bands have given exciting performances, received superior ratings, and have been accepted to the the 2014 Music for All National Concert Band Festival, Illinois Music Educator’s Association All-State Conference, and the University of Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival. Mr. Gros is an eleven time recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence, and is in demand as an adjudicator and clinician.
Mr. Gros’ musical interests sparked at a young age when his grandfather, a jazz pianist, introduced him to the sounds of jazz. As much as he hates to admit it, seeing a Kenny G concert is the reason Mr. Gros decided to play the saxophone. After having a successful elementary saxophone career at Homer School District 33C under the direction of Sherri Harrison, Mr. Gros attended Lockport Township High School. Under the direction of Daniel Valkema, Mr. Gros attended the 2001 IMEA All-State Conference, the 2000 Bands of America National Concert Band Festival, and the 1999-2001 Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festivals. It was the nurturing atmosphere, lifelong friendships, breathtaking performances, and the immense joy Mr. Gros took from his high school band experiences that convinced him that music always needed to be a part of his life.
Mr. Gros received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Illinois in December of 2005. While at Illinois, Mr. Gros studied saxophone with Professor Debra Richtmeyer. Mr. Gros performed with the Illinois Wind Symphony, under the direction of James Keene, and Marching Illini. In 2005, Mr. Gros commissioned and premiered “SuperCell” for alto saxophone and percussion ensemble by world-famous composer David R. Gillingham.
Aside from the many hours dedicated to the students at Warren Township High School, Mr. Gros enjoys long-distance bicycling, model railroading, traveling, playing Cities: Skylines and The Sims, and loves anything Apple Computer related. He currently lives in Antioch with his supportive partner Scott, their French Bulldog Vivian, and their two cats Ed and Mac.
